The "Coticule" and the "Blue whetstone" are natural abrasive stones with a very fine grain. The deposit, unique in the world, has been exploited near Vielsalm in the Belgian Ardennes for more than a century. The stones are extracted from a geological layer 480 million years old, and was created by the petrification of clay and volcanic ash. The stones consist of a large number of small garnets compressed in a mica and quartz matrix. The evenness and fineness of the garnet grains (5 to 20 microns) give these stones their exceptional abrasive properties, without impurities. Ideal for sharpening wood carving chisels.
These stones are a special selection and not standard coticules.
