Used to part the finished project off from the waste material, the parallel sides make for a rigid tool that handles well. The tools reduces the amount of waste, vital if using an expensive wood. It also makes for a fine detailing tool, e.g. beads and fillets.
This chisel has the same thickness along its entire length. Therefore, one should not insert more than 3 cm deep into the wood. Deeper penetration will cause too much friction on both sides of the blade. This combined with too much distance between the cutting point and the support point (where the chisel lies on the chisel support) can result in the blade breaking off at the handle. If one wants to cut/sharpen deeper than 3 cm, the slot should be made larger than the thickness of the chisel so that the friction on the blade is eliminated.
