Wire burn tools are used to add detail to woodturnings by creating a crisp black line. Wire burn lines can be used to define beads and other details, or used to add decoration to straight cylindrical sections of turnings.

KC Wire Burners are made from high quality musical instrument wire and feature color-coded wooden balls as handles to help you quickly identify the thickness of the wire and to ensure safe operation.

When wire burning on a straight cylinder, first scribe a line to be burned by using a skew or diamond point tool to make a very small vee groove. This will keep the wire from "skating" along the surface. While holding a handle in each hand, put tension on the wire and with moderate pressure hold the wire against the rotating turning until enough friction is generated to cause the wire to burn the wood. Usually a small amount of smoke is produced. Buff the surface with steel wool and apply finish.

This set includes three diameters of tools for creating fine, medium, and bold wire burn details on bowls and other larger diameter turnings. The handles are color coded for easy identification: 0.4 mm natural, 0.8 mm yellow, 1.1 mm green.
