The straight hook tool is ideal for cylindrical woodturning and should be used in a scraping motion when woodturning the sides of an object. It is very similar to ring tools, but the difference is that the wood can be removed much faster. Cutting should be as smooth as with a ring tool.

Both of Wiedemann's hook tools are perfect for endwood turning. Never use a hook tool for longitudinal woodturning.
