Making hollow forms has become very popular with many woodturners. Robert Sorby has therefore designed a number of special tools that make the turning of these shapes much easier. The curved hollowing chisels are used for workpieces where the diameter of the hole is (much) smaller than its internal diameter. Straight hollowing tools are used for the deeper parts of these workpieces. Both the straight and the curved hollowing tools are available in several dimensions.
The 609 mm version (859H) is produced from a more substantial steel section and is suitable for both end grain and side grain working.
All of these tools are used with the round bar directly behind the swan neck against the tool rest.
