Impregnating oil is used to treat new wood to ensure that it will last as long as possible. Impregnating oil makes it difficult for moisture to penetrate the wood, keeping it drier and therefore less prone to wood rot. Many garden woods are treated with harmful chemicals to give the wood a longer life. Our Impregnating Oil, on the other hand, makes exclusive use of the properties Mother Nature has imparted to her products.
In addition to excellent impregnation, Impregnating Oil ensures good adhesion of the final finish to the substrate. Impregnating oil is not a final product but is finished with other products.
Impregnating oil contains Tung oil. The Tung oil we use in our Impregnating Oil is also known as Chinese wood oil and is known as "the queen of all wood oils" due to its unique properties. Thus, Tung oil is not only used in our Impregnation oil for its excellent water-repellent properties, but it also does not yellow, is resistant to many (cleaning) chemicals, gives a beautiful protective film and is also UV-resistant.
Because this oil also contains Linseed oil, it yellows and darkens light wood. On dark wood this effect is less noticeable.
What is impregnation oil?
Our Impregnating Oil is specially developed from natural, renewable raw materials, it penetrates deep into the wood and provides excellent adhesion for the final finish. You may therefore compare Impregnating Oil to a kind of primer for oil finishes.
Impregnating oil is suitable for all dark wood species, both indoors and outdoors. Because Impregnating Oil can strongly yellow light-coloured woods, those woods are better pre-treated with two coats of diluted Improved Wood Oil.
Key ingredients:
- Chinese Tung Oil (Tung Oil)
- Refined Linseed oil
- Dehydrated Castor Oil
- Colophony
- Drying agent (Lead-free and Cobalt-free)
- This product contains no solvent
Preparation before use:
- The wood should be clean and dry.
- If required, sand to a minimum of 180-grit paper.
- Remove dust and grease from the surface by wiping with turpentine oil.
Application:
Apply a thin layer of oil to the surface using a block witter, flat brush, patent brush or roller.
Treat knots, cracks and the like carefully.
Where the oil is easily absorbed apply an additional coat immediately (wet in wet).
Allow to penetrate for approx. 30 minutes, depending on temperature. Shorter in warm weather, longer in cooler weather.
After this time, but in any case before the oil begins to dry, wipe off any excess oil with clean, dry cloths so that no oil remains on the surface. If the excess oil is removed too late or not thoroughly enough, this can result in a slow-drying layer that starts to wrinkle and stick.
Normally, one or two layers are sufficient, but if necessary, apply subsequent layers of oil at least 24 hours apart. If required, sand lightly between coats to remove any fibres that have built up.
Finish with one of the finishing oils such as Bankirai Oil, Hardwood Oil, Teak Oil or (Improved) Danish Oil.
How much do you need?
Consumption is directly dependent on the absorbency of the wood and can therefore vary very much but averages between 15 and 30 square metres per litre per coat.
Drying time:
The drying time depends mainly on temperature, humidity and layer thickness.
Under normal conditions, the oil is dry within 20 hours. Always apply a maximum of one coat per day.
Process the oil at normal temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees. Processing at temperatures above 30 degrees or below 5 degrees and processing in full sun or high humidity can negatively affect the quality.
Do you not expect to use all the oil at once? Then order Stoploss bags to keep surplus oil in good condition. You can use them to keep the oil oxygen-free so it will not dry out and remains fully usable. The Stoplossbags are reusable and do not need to be thrown away.
