An awl can be used to poke a small hole in soft material such as wood. It is not suitable for scratching into metal or other hard materials. This is because the awl is made of a softer type of steel.
It is also possible to scratch a line on dark wood in case markings with a pencil are not easily visible.
This is an awl with a square shaft. This is useful when the hole needs to be a bit larger. By turning the awl while pricking, you can increase the diameter of the hole a little.
