Choose the most suitable Japanese waterstone:
There are different types of Japanese waterstones available, ranging from coarse to very fine grains. Choose one suitable for your sharpening task.
Grain 100-400: Pre-grinding of blunt tools
Grain 400-1000: First sharpening of the tool
Grit 1000-3000: Second sharpening of the tool
Grit 3000-10000: Polish the sharpened tool to maximum sharpness
If the tool is damaged and has several notches, use coarse grits before moving to finer grits.
Soak the water stone:
Soak the water stone in water for a few minutes before using it.
Start grinding:
Place the waterstone on a stable surface. We recommend using a waterstone holder.
Hold the tool at the right angle to sharpen against the stone.
The angle varies depending on the tool. Check the sharpness of the tool regularly.
Practice makes perfect!
