The "Coticule" and the "Blue whetstone" are natural abrasive stones with a very fine grain. The deposit, unique in the world, has been exploited near Vielsalm in the Belgian Ardennes for more than a century. The stones are extracted from a geological layer 480 million years old, and was created by the petrification of clay and volcanic ash. The stones consist of a large number of small garnets compressed in a mica and quartz matrix. The evenness and fineness of the garnet grains (5 to 20 microns) give these stones their exceptional abrasive properties. Ideal for sharpening wood carving chisels.
