Follow these steps to properly use Arkansas oil with Arkansas stones:
Clean the stone:
Make sure your Arkansas grinding stone is clean and contains no dirt or metal particles.
If it is a new stone, rinse it with water to remove any factory residue.
Apply the oil:
Apply a few drops of oil to the surface of the stone. You don't need to saturate the stone; a light layer is enough.
Lubricate while grinding:
While sharpening, keep the stone lubricated with the oil.
It reduces the friction between the knife and the stone, making the sharpening process smoother.
Chips (metal particles) created during sharpening can clog the stone.
The oil helps to wash away chips.
It prevents the stone from drying out and helps maintain its effectiveness.
Sharpening technique:
Place the knife on the stone at the desired angle (usually around 20 degrees for kitchen knives).
Move the blade across the stone in a controlled manner, ensuring constant pressure.
Alternate sides to sharpen evenly.
Keep sharpening until you reach the desired edge.
Wipe clean and store:
Wipe excess oil off the stone after sharpening.
Store your Arkansas stone in a dry place to avoid moisture build-up.
Remember that Arkansas stones are relatively hard and fine-grained, so they work best with light pressure. Regular maintenance with oil will keep your stone in excellent condition for years!
